Jain New Year · Gautam Swami Keval Gyan

जैन नव वर्ष · गौतम स्वामी केवलज्ञान

The Vir Nirvan Samvat begins; Gautam Swami, Mahavir’s chief disciple, attains omniscience.

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

On Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the morning after Mahavir’s nirvana, the Jain new year (Vir Nirvan Samvat) begins. Gautam Swami attained keval gyan on this day.

The story behind it

Gautam Swami (Indrabhuti Gautam) loved his teacher so deeply that this attachment was the last bond keeping him from omniscience. Mahavir had sent him to teach elsewhere before his nirvana. Hearing of it, Gautam grieved — then realised that even attachment to the Guru is attachment, let it go, and attained keval gyan that very night. Jains begin the year by hearing the “Gautam Raas” and the auspicious verses (Navsmaran).

How to celebrate

  • Hear the Gautam Swami Raas and the new-year mangalik
  • Begin new account books (chopda pujan) with prayer
  • Greet: “Nutan varsh abhinandan”
  • Make a resolution of restraint for the year
