Gyan Panchami
ज्ञान पंचमी
The day to honour knowledge and the scriptures, on Kartik Shukla Panchami.
Why it is celebrated
On Gyan (Saubhagya) Panchami Jains worship the five kinds of knowledge, clean and display the scriptures, and pray for right knowledge.
The story behind it
The Varadatta–Gunamanjari katha tells of a boy and a girl who suffered illness and dullness because in a past life they had disrespected books and teachers. On a sage’s advice they kept the Gyan Panchami fast and honoured knowledge, and were cured. So on this day books are never stepped over or thrown; old manuscripts are aired and worshipped, and children’s notebooks and pens are placed before the temple.
How to celebrate
- Worship books, pens and scriptures; never treat paper carelessly
- Fast or keep ekasana and recite “Om hrim namo nanassa”
- Donate books or support a library
- Begin a new study or a child’s learning
