Samvatsari
संवत्सरी
The last day of Paryushan: the yearly confession and the day of forgiveness — “Micchami Dukkadam”.
Why it is celebrated
Samvatsari, on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (Shwetambar), is the holiest day of the Jain year. Jains perform the yearly pratikraman and ask forgiveness of every living being.
The story behind it
In the Samvatsari pratikraman, which lasts about three hours, Jains reflect on every harm they may have caused — knowingly or unknowingly, by thought, word or deed — to any living being, from humans to the smallest insects. Afterwards they greet family, friends and even rivals with folded hands: “Micchami Dukkadam” — may all my wrongs be forgiven. Letters and messages of forgiveness are sent across the world.
How to celebrate
- Keep a full fast (upvas) if you can
- Attend the Samvatsari pratikraman
- Say “Micchami Dukkadam” to everyone, especially those you have hurt
- Forgive others with an open heart
