Rishabhdev (Adinath)
ऋषभदेव (आदिनाथ)
The first Tirthankara, who taught people farming, writing and crafts, and showed the path of renunciation.
Why it is celebrated
Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), the first of the 24 Tirthankaras, is remembered on his Janma and Diksha Kalyanak (Chaitra Krishna Ashtami) and his nirvana on Meru Trayodashi.
The story behind it
Born in Ayodhya to King Nabhiraja and Queen Marudevi at the dawn of human civilisation, Rishabhdev taught people the arts of living — asi (defence), masi (writing) and krishi (farming) — and his daughters Brahmi and Sundari were taught script and numbers. He renounced his kingdom and fasted for a whole year because no one knew how to offer food to a monk; on Akshaya Tritiya Prince Shreyans offered him sugarcane juice. He attained nirvana on Mount Ashtapad.
How to celebrate
- Worship Adinath at the temple and do abhishek
- Begin or end a varshitap (year-long alternate-day fast)
- Read the story of Rishabhdev and Bharat-Bahubali
- Give food to the needy
