Meru Trayodashi

मेरु त्रयोदशी

The nirvana of Bhagwan Rishabhdev on Mount Ashtapad, kept with a fast and worship of a ghee “Meru”.

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

On Magha Krishna Trayodashi Jains remember the nirvana of Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara, on Mount Ashtapad.

The story behind it

Rishabhdev fasted for six days and attained moksha on the peak of Ashtapad. His son Bharat Chakravarti built a jewelled temple there with images of all 24 Tirthankaras. Families make five small “Meru” mountains of ghee or rice and worship them, and the katha of Pingal Kumar, who gained a son by keeping this vrat, is read.

How to celebrate

  • Fast or keep ekasana
  • Worship five Meru shapes made of ghee or rice
  • Hear the Meru Trayodashi katha
  • Read about Ashtapad and Bharat Chakravarti
