Das Lakshan Parva
दसलक्षण पर्व
Ten days (Digambar) devoted to the ten virtues, ending on Anant Chaturdashi.
Why it is celebrated
From Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami to Anant Chaturdashi, Digambar Jains keep Das Lakshan Parva, the “festival of ten virtues”, one virtue for each day.
The story behind it
The ten virtues (uttam dharma) are: forgiveness (kshama), humility (mardav), straightforwardness (arjav), purity (shauch), truth (satya), self-restraint (sanyam), austerity (tap), renunciation (tyag), non-attachment (akinchanya) and celibacy (brahmacharya). Each day one virtue is explained and one chapter of the Tattvartha Sutra is read. On Anant Chaturdashi many complete long fasts, and the festival ends with Kshamavani.
How to celebrate
- Attend the daily puja and pravachan
- Practise the virtue of the day
- Read one chapter of the Tattvartha Sutra each day
- Fast as you are able; break fasts with simple food
