Jain New Year · Gautam Swami Keval Gyan
Comienza el Vir Nirvan Samvat; Gautam Swami, discípulo principal de Mahavir, alcanza la omnisciencia.
Por qué se celebra
On Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the morning after Mahavir’s nirvana, the Jain new year (Vir Nirvan Samvat) begins. Gautam Swami attained keval gyan on this day.
La historia que hay detrás
Gautam Swami (Indrabhuti Gautam) loved his teacher so deeply that this attachment was the last bond keeping him from omniscience. Mahavir had sent him to teach elsewhere before his nirvana. Hearing of it, Gautam grieved — then realised that even attachment to the Guru is attachment, let it go, and attained keval gyan that very night. Jains begin the year by hearing the “Gautam Raas” and the auspicious verses (Navsmaran).
Cómo celebrarla
- Hear the Gautam Swami Raas and the new-year mangalik
- Begin new account books (chopda pujan) with prayer
- Greet: “Nutan varsh abhinandan”
- Make a resolution of restraint for the year
