Kartik Purnima (Jain)
कार्तिक पूर्णिमा (जैन)
The end of Chaturmas: the Shatrunjaya (Palitana) yatra reopens.
Why it is celebrated
On Kartik Purnima the four months of Chaturmas end, monks resume their travels, and the pilgrimage to Shatrunjaya hill at Palitana reopens for the year.
The story behind it
Shatrunjaya is the holiest Jain pilgrimage: Bhagwan Rishabhdev is said to have preached there many times, and countless souls attained liberation on the hill. Since pilgrims do not climb during the rains to avoid harming life, the first climb of the season on Kartik Purnima draws huge crowds, who climb the 3,500 steps barefoot to the temple city at the top.
How to celebrate
- Make the Shatrunjaya yatra or worship its picture (pat darshan) at your temple
- Hear the story of Rishabhdev and Shatrunjaya
- Give to pilgrims and to the monks who resume their travels
- Keep ekasana or a fast
