Ayambil Oli
आयंबिल ओली
Nine days of plain, tasteless food and worship of the Navpad, twice a year.
Why it is celebrated
Twice a year, from Shukla Saptami to Purnima of Chaitra and Ashwin, Jains keep the Ayambil Oli: one meal a day of boiled grain without salt, oil, ghee, milk, sugar or spices, and worship of the nine supreme states (Navpad / Siddhachakra).
The story behind it
The Shripal–Mayanasundari katha is read during these days. Princess Mayanasundari, married off by her angry father to a leper, Shripal, did not despair; on a monk’s advice they kept the Ayambil Oli and worshipped the Siddhachakra, and Shripal was cured and went on to great fortune. The tasteless food teaches freedom from craving.
How to celebrate
- Keep ayambil — one plain meal a day — for as many days as you can
- Worship the Siddhachakra (Navpad) yantra
- Hear the Shripal–Mayanasundari katha
- Recite the Navkar mantra
