Paryushan Mahaparva
पर्युषण महापर्व
Eight days (Shwetambar) of fasting, scripture and self-reflection, ending on Samvatsari.
Why it is celebrated
Paryushan, “staying close to the soul”, is the most important Jain festival. Shwetambar Jains keep eight days ending on Samvatsari; Digambar Jains keep ten days of Das Lakshan right after.
The story behind it
During these days monks and nuns read the Kalpa Sutra, the life of Mahavir and the Tirthankaras. On the fifth day the birth of Mahavir is read (Janma Vanchan) and the fourteen dreams of Queen Trishala are displayed and worshipped. Many keep fasts — some for one day, some for all eight (atthai), drinking only boiled water — and spend the days in samayik, pratikraman and reflection.
How to celebrate
- Attend the daily pravachan and Kalpa Sutra reading
- Keep whatever fast you can: ekasana, upvas or atthai
- Do samayik and evening pratikraman
- Avoid green vegetables, root vegetables and eating after sunset
