Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji
गुरु हरकृष्ण साहिब जी
The eighth Sikh Guru, the Bal Guru, who served the sick of Delhi during a smallpox epidemic.
Why it is celebrated
Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji (1656–1664) became Guru at the age of five. His Parkash, Gurgaddi and Joti Jot days are Gurpurabs; Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi stands where he stayed.
The story behind it
Summoned to Delhi by Emperor Aurangzeb, the child Guru stayed at Raja Jai Singh’s bungalow — now Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. When smallpox and cholera swept the city, he tended the sick of every faith, and the water of the well there is still taken as healing. He caught the disease himself and, before passing at the age of eight, said “Baba Bakale” — the next Guru would be found at the village of Bakala, where Guru Tegh Bahadur was living.
How to celebrate

- Recite the line “Sri Harkrishan dhiaiai jis dithe sab dukh jaye” from the Ardas
- Help at a hospital, a blood drive or a health camp
- Serve in the langar
