Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
श्री गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब जी
The eternal Guru of the Sikhs: its first installation in 1604 and its Gurta Gaddi in 1708.
Why it is celebrated
Two days honour the scripture: its first Parkash at Harmandir Sahib in 1604, and its Gurta Gaddi Divas in 1708, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji made it the living Guru.
The story behind it
Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled the Adi Granth and installed it in the Harmandir Sahib in 1604, with Baba Buddha Ji as its first granthi. Guru Gobind Singh Ji later added the bani of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and, at Nanded in 1708, bowed before it and declared it the Guru for all time: “Guru Granth ji maneyo, pargat Guran ki deh”. Its 1,430 pages (angs) hold the words of six Gurus and of Hindu and Muslim saints alike, written in Gurmukhi and sung in 31 ragas.
How to celebrate
- Attend the Akhand Path and its bhog
- Listen to kirtan in the ragas of the scripture
- Do a Sehaj Path at home over some weeks
- Learn a few lines of Gurmukhi with your children
