Guru Nanak Dev Ji

गुरु नानक देव जी

The first Sikh Guru, who taught one God, honest work, sharing and the equality of all.

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539) founded the Sikh faith. His Parkash Purab on Kartik Puranmashi is the biggest Gurpurab of the year; his Joti Jot Divas remembers his passing at Kartarpur.

The story behind it

Born at Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib), young Nanak was given twenty rupees by his father to make a “true bargain”; he fed hungry sadhus with it and called that the true bargain (Sacha Sauda). After a vision at the river Bein he declared “There is no Hindu, there is no Musalman” and began his message: Ik Onkar — there is one God. He travelled for over twenty years on four long journeys (udasis) with Bhai Mardana, and settled at Kartarpur, where he farmed, sang hymns and started the free kitchen, langar, where all sat together as equals.

How to celebrate

  • Join the Prabhat Pheri at dawn and the Nagar Kirtan
  • Attend the Akhand Path and kirtan at the gurdwara
  • Serve or eat in the langar, sitting together in pangat
  • Remember his three teachings: Naam japo, kirat karo, vand chhako
