Guru Gobind Singh Ji
गुरु गोबिंद सिंह जी
The tenth Sikh Guru, warrior and poet, who created the Khalsa and made the Guru Granth Sahib the eternal Guru.
Why it is celebrated
Guru Gobind Singh Ji (1666–1708) is remembered on his Parkash Purab (Poh Sudi 7), Gurgaddi, wedding day (Vyah Purab) and Joti Jot Divas at Nanded.
The story behind it
Born Gobind Rai at Patna, he became Guru at nine after his father’s martyrdom. On Vaisakhi 1699 at Anandpur Sahib he asked for a head for the faith; five Sikhs from different castes and regions stepped forward — the Panj Pyare — and he initiated them with amrit, then took amrit from them himself, creating the Khalsa. He lost his four sons and his mother in the struggle against tyranny, yet wrote the Zafarnama, a letter of victory, to Aurangzeb. At Nanded in 1708 he declared the Guru Granth Sahib the Guru forever.
