Maundy Thursday
पुण्य गुरुवार (मॉन्डी थर्सडे)
The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples and the washing of their feet.
Why it is celebrated
On the Thursday of Holy Week, Christians remember the Last Supper, when Jesus gave the bread and wine as his body and blood, and gave the commandment (mandatum, hence “Maundy”) to love one another.
The story behind it
At supper in an upper room in Jerusalem, Jesus took a basin and towel and washed the feet of his disciples, the work of a servant, and told them to serve one another in the same way. He broke bread and shared the cup, saying “Do this in memory of me.” That night he prayed in the garden of Gethsemane and was arrested.
How to celebrate
- Attend the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper
- Take part in or watch the washing of the feet
- Keep watch in prayer late into the night
- Serve someone humbly
