Good Friday
गुड फ़्राइडे
The day of Jesus’s crucifixion, kept with prayer, fasting and the Way of the Cross.
Why it is celebrated
Good Friday remembers the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha, outside Jerusalem. Christians call it “good” because they believe his sacrifice brought salvation.
The story behind it
Arrested on Thursday night after Judas betrayed him, Jesus was tried before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, crowned with thorns and made to carry his cross. He was crucified between two thieves. From the cross he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” and at three in the afternoon he died, saying, “It is finished.” Churches are bare, and many keep a fast and walk the fourteen Stations of the Cross.
How to celebrate
- Attend the Good Friday service and the Way of the Cross
- Fast and abstain from meat
- Spend the afternoon (12 to 3) in quiet prayer
- Do an act of forgiveness
