All Souls’ Day

सर्व आत्मा दिवस

A day to pray for the departed and visit their graves (2 November).

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

On All Souls’ Day Christians pray for all who have died, especially family members, and visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers and candles.

The story behind it

The custom of a day of prayer for the dead was spread by Saint Odilo, abbot of Cluny, around 998. In India families gather at cemeteries in the evening, and the rows of candles make it one of the most moving sights of the year.

How to celebrate

  • Visit and clean the graves of loved ones
  • Light candles and offer flowers
  • Attend the Mass for the departed
  • Tell children about their grandparents and ancestors
