First Sunday of Advent

आगमन काल का पहला रविवार

The start of Advent, four weeks of waiting and preparation for Christmas, and of the Church year.

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

Advent (“coming”) begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It prepares hearts for the birth of Jesus and opens the new liturgical year.

The story behind it

The prophets of the Old Testament, like Isaiah, foretold a saviour: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Families light the Advent wreath — one more candle each Sunday, for hope, peace, joy and love — until Christmas.

How to celebrate

  • Light the first candle of the Advent wreath
  • Begin an Advent calendar with children
  • Read the prophecies of Isaiah
  • Plan gifts for the needy
