Akshaya Tritiya
अक्षय तृतीया
The “never-ending” day: what is begun or given today is believed to grow without end.
Why it is celebrated
Akshaya means “that which never diminishes”. Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya is one of the few days that is auspicious all day without needing a muhurat.
The story behind it
Several stories meet on this day. Lord Parashurama was born on it. The Pandavas received the Akshaya Patra from the Sun god in exile — a vessel that never ran out of food. Sudama visited his childhood friend Krishna with a handful of beaten rice, and went home to find his hut turned into a palace. Ganga is also said to have descended to earth today.
How to celebrate
- Begin something new — a business, a home, a course
- Buy gold or silver if you wish, or give to charity
- Donate water, pots, grain or fans in the summer heat
- Worship Lakshmi-Narayan
