Hariyali Teej
हरियाली तीज
The green festival of the monsoon, celebrating the reunion of Shiva and Parvati.
Why it is celebrated
On Shravana Shukla Tritiya married women pray for their husbands’ long life and girls for a good husband, in the fresh green of the rains.
The story behind it
Goddess Parvati wished to marry Lord Shiva and did penance for 108 births. In her 108th birth Shiva was finally pleased and accepted her as his wife — on this day of the rainy season. Teej celebrates that steadfast love. The name comes from teej, the little red velvet-mite that appears after the rains.
How to celebrate
- Wear green clothes and bangles, apply mehendi
- Swing on jhoolas tied to trees and sing Teej songs
- Worship Shiva-Parvati and keep a fast
- Exchange sindhara gifts — ghewar, sweets, clothes
