Gita Jayanti
गीता जयंती
The day Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna at Kurukshetra.
Why it is celebrated
On Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi (Mokshada Ekadashi) the Bhagavad Gita was spoken on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
The story behind it
Facing his own teachers and cousins across the battlefield, Arjuna lost heart and put down his bow. His charioteer, Lord Krishna, then taught him — in 700 verses — about duty without attachment to results, the undying soul, devotion and knowledge. Arjuna’s doubts cleared and he took up his duty. The Gita has guided people ever since, from saints to Mahatma Gandhi.
How to celebrate
- Read or chant the whole Gita or one chapter
- Join a Gita path at a temple or ISKCON
- Give a copy of the Gita to someone
- Keep the Mokshada Ekadashi fast
