Guru Amar Das Ji
Le troisième Guru sikh, qui a fait de « d’abord le langar, ensuite la sangat » la règle et s’est opposé à la sati et au purdah.
Pourquoi on la célèbre
Guru Amar Das Ji (1479–1574) became Guru at the age of 73 after years of humble service to Guru Angad Dev Ji. His Parkash, Gurgaddi and Joti Jot days are Gurpurabs.
L’histoire qui s’y rattache
For twelve years Amar Das carried water from the river Beas every morning for Guru Angad’s bath, even in old age. One stormy night he stumbled and a weaver’s wife mocked him as “Amru the homeless”; Guru Angad embraced him as “the home of the homeless”. As Guru at Goindwal he built the baoli (step-well) with 84 steps, and made everyone — even Emperor Akbar — eat in the langar, sitting on the floor, before meeting him. He spoke against sati and the veil, and appointed women as preachers.
