Pitru Paksha begins
Quinze jours pour se souvenir des ancêtres et les nourrir (shraddha).
Pourquoi on la célèbre
The dark fortnight after Bhadrapada Purnima is set aside for the pitrs — ancestors — who are believed to visit their families now.
L’histoire qui s’y rattache
When the generous warrior Karna died and reached heaven, he was given gold and jewels to eat instead of food. Told that he had given only gold in life and never food to his ancestors, he was allowed to return to earth for fifteen days to offer food and water to them — these became the days of Pitru Paksha. Each ancestor is remembered on the tithi of their death.
Comment la célébrer
- Offer tarpan (water with sesame) and pind daan
- Feed Brahmins, cows, crows and dogs on the tithi
- Avoid new purchases and celebrations
- Remember ancestors with gratitude and charity
