Parshvanath was born in Varanasi to King Ashvasena and Queen Vamadevi on Paush Krishna Dashami. Many Jains fast for three days around this date (Paush Dashami tap)।

As a young prince, Parshva saw the ascetic Kamath performing a fire ritual and warned him that a pair of snakes was burning inside a log। The log was split open and the dying snakes heard the Navkar mantra from Parshva; they were reborn as Dharanendra and Padmavati। Years later, when Kamath — reborn as a god — attacked the meditating Parshvanath with storms and floods, Dharanendra spread his hood over him as a shield; that is why Parshvanath idols have a serpent hood।
