As a young prince, Parshva saw the ascetic Kamath performing a fire ritual and warned him that a pair of snakes was burning inside a log. The log was split open and the dying snakes heard the Navkar mantra from Parshva; they were reborn as Dharanendra and Padmavati. Years later, when Kamath — reborn as a god — attacked the meditating Parshvanath with storms and floods, Dharanendra spread his hood over him as a shield; that is why Parshvanath idols have a serpent hood.
