Vassa (Rains Retreat)
Los tres meses de lluvias en que los monjes permanecen en un monasterio para estudiar y meditar.
Por qué se celebra
Vassa begins the day after Ashadha Purnima. For three lunar months monks and nuns do not travel, and lay people often take extra precepts.
La historia que hay detrás
In the Buddha’s time farmers complained that wandering monks trampled young crops in the rains. The Buddha then asked the Sangha to stay in one place during the monsoon, to protect life and deepen practice. Many lay Buddhists give up something — meat, alcohol, a habit — for the retreat.
Cómo celebrarla
- Offer candles and robes to the monastery at the start of Vassa
- Take a vow for the three months
- Join regular meditation and Dhamma talks
- Avoid harming small creatures in the rains
