Kathina
El mes posterior al retiro de las lluvias, cuando los laicos ofrecen hábitos a los monjes; termina en Kartik Purnima.
Por qué se celebra
In the month after Vassa, a community may offer a Kathina robe to a monastery once a year. The season closes on the full moon of Kartik.
La historia que hay detrás
Thirty monks once walked to meet the Buddha at Savatthi but the rains began on the way and they had to spend the Vassa apart from him; they arrived at last with muddy, torn robes. The Buddha allowed that after the retreat, cloth offered by lay people could be sewn into a robe in a single day and given to one monk chosen by the Sangha — the Kathina.
Cómo celebrarla
- Join a Kathina ceremony and procession
- Offer robes, books or medicines to the monastery
- Help sew or prepare offerings
- Share a meal with the community
