Amavasya
La luna nueva: un día para los antepasados, la oración tranquila y la caridad.
Por qué se celebra
Amavasya, the moonless day, is dedicated to the pitrs (ancestors). It is called Somvati Amavasya on a Monday and Shani Amavasya on a Saturday. Diwali and Mahalaya fall on Amavasya.
La historia que hay detrás
On the new moon the sun and moon stand together, and tradition holds that the ancestors wait at the door for an offering of water and sesame. The Mahabharata tells that Bhishma, on his bed of arrows, explained to Yudhishthira that offerings to the ancestors on Amavasya please them for a whole month.
Cómo celebrarla
- Offer tarpan with water and black sesame for the ancestors
- Feed cows, crows, dogs and the needy
- Light a lamp under a peepal tree in the evening
- Avoid starting new ventures
