The songs of Lohri remember Dulla Bhatti, a Robin Hood of Akbar’s time in Punjab, who rescued poor girls being sold and arranged their marriages — “Sundar mundriye ho!” is sung for him. Families with a new bride or a newborn celebrate their first Lohri with special joy. The fire is thanked for warmth and a good harvest.
