The Brahma Purana says Lord Brahma began creating the world on this day, so it is the birthday of the universe. In Maharashtra the gudi — a cloth on a raised pole topped with a pot — recalls victory flags raised for Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya and for King Shalivahana, whose era also starts now. “Ugadi” comes from yuga + adi, “the beginning of an age”.
