The story

Far, far in the north, where the land is white with snow, a little polar bear cub lived with her mother in a cosy snow den.

One evening, the cub peeped out of the den. Soft snowflakes were falling from the sky, floating down like tiny feathers. “Mama,” she whispered, “the snow makes everything so quiet.”

“Yes,” said Mama Bear, coming to sit beside her. “Let us listen.” So they listened. They heard the soft hush of the falling snow. They heard the wind singing a low, sleepy song. Far away, they heard the sea moving slowly under the ice. Everything else was still.

The cub looked up. Between the clouds, she could see the stars twinkling, one by one. “Are the stars going to sleep too?” she asked. “The stars are keeping watch,” said Mama, “so that all the little ones can rest.”

Then Mama Bear led her cub back inside the den. She curled her big, warm body around her, like a soft white blanket. The cub snuggled into her mother’s thick fur. She could hear Mama’s slow, steady heartbeat — thump… thump… thump.

Outside, the snow kept falling, quiet and gentle. Inside, the little cub was warm and safe. Her eyes closed, her breathing grew slow, and she drifted into a dream as soft and white as the snow.

Parent / Teacher Discussion

An original TotsName story. It is true that mother polar bears shelter their young cubs in snow dens; the talking and the stars “keeping watch” are make-believe.
