Pateti, the day before Navroz, takes its name from patet — repentance. Parsis reflect on the past year and pray to begin the new one with good thoughts, good words and good deeds.

Zarathushtra taught the three principles of Humata, Hukhta, Hvarshta — good thoughts, good words, good deeds. On Pateti the Patet prayer is recited, asking forgiveness for wrong done in thought, word or deed, so that the soul enters the new year clean.
