Muktad (Farvardegan days)

मुक्ताद (फरवरदेगान दिन)

Ten days before Navroz to honour the souls (fravashis) of the departed.

🔊 Listen to the story

Why it is celebrated

During Muktad, the last ten days of the year including the five Gatha days, Zoroastrians believe the fravashis — guardian spirits of the departed — visit their families.

The story behind it

Silver or brass vases filled with fresh flowers are placed on marble tables in the fire temple or at home, one for each departed family member, and prayers are said for them morning and evening. It is a time of remembrance, gratitude and quiet devotion before the joy of the New Year.

How to celebrate

  • Set flower vases for departed family members
  • Attend Muktad prayers at the agiary
  • Recite the Gathas of Zarathushtra
  • Keep the home clean and lamps lit
