The Ascension is celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter (a Thursday), recalling the risen Jesus being taken up into heaven before his disciples.

For forty days after the Resurrection Jesus appeared to his disciples and taught them. On the Mount of Olives he blessed them, told them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit and to be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth” — and was lifted up and hidden by a cloud.
