How We Calculate Your Kundali & Kundali Milan
Every setting, rule and table behind the Kundali and Gun Milan on Totsname — with the source each rule comes from. Where traditions differ, we say which version we use.
1. Astronomy
| Setting | What we use |
|---|---|
| Zodiac | Sidereal (Nirayana), the standard of Vedic astrology |
| Ayanamsa | Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) — India's official ayanamsa. Astrologers can switch the result page and the PDF to Krishnamurti (KP, −0.0968° from Lahiri) or B. V. Raman (−1.4463°); these offsets match Swiss Ephemeris to 0.0001° from 1900 to 2050. |
| Rahu / Ketu | Mean node (Madhya Rahu), as shown by default in most Indian software. The true node (Spashta Rahu) can be chosen on the result page; the two differ by up to about 1.9°. The report states which one was used. |
| Chart style | North-Indian (diamond) or South-Indian (fixed signs) — on the page and in the PDF. The Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam PDFs use the South-Indian chart unless you choose otherwise. |
| Planet positions | VSOP87 planetary theory and the full lunar series (Meeus) |
| Houses | Whole-sign houses from the Lagna; a Bhava Chalit chart is shown as well |
| Birth place | About 1.4 lakh Indian villages and towns (India Post directory, with obviously wrong coordinates removed) and 1.6 lakh places worldwide (GeoNames). You can also type coordinates, e.g. 26.85, 80.95. |
| Birth time zone | The birth city's real clock offset on the birth date from the IANA time-zone database — including India's +6:30 war time (1942–45) and daylight saving abroad |
✓ Tested Our automated tests compare both of our engines (the free Kundali page and the premium PDF) with Swiss Ephemeris for 60 births from 1900 to 2030 in 15 cities on five continents. Every planet is within 1 arc-minute, and the Lagna sign, Moon Nakshatra, Pada and retrograde planets match in every case.
✓ Spot check, October 2026 300 random births from 1930 to 2025 (India, New York, London, Sydney, Oslo) against Swiss Ephemeris 2.10: the largest difference was 26 arc-seconds for the Moon, about 20″ for the other planets and 21″ for the Lagna, with no difference in any sign, Nakshatra or Lagna sign.
2. Manglik (Mangal) Dosha
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the Lagna and from the Moon. From both = Manglik; from one = Partial Manglik. Mars in the 2nd house is shown as a note — it counts only in the South Indian tradition.
The dosha is shown as cancelled when one of these applies, and the page says which one:
- Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn)
- Jupiter with Mars, or aspecting Mars; the Moon with Mars
- Cancer or Leo Lagna (Mars is the yoga-karaka)
- The traditional sign–house exceptions (e.g. Mars in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn)
Honest note: no classical verse (BPHS, Phaladeepika) defines Manglik dosha or its cancellations — they come from later tradition, and we label them that way.
3. Yogas
| Yoga | Rule we apply | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Neecha Bhanga | A debilitated planet is cancelled only when its sign lord or exaltation lord is in a Kendra from the Lagna or Moon, the two lords are in mutual Kendras, or the sign lord aspects it. "Raja Yoga" is added only when the cancelling lord is in a Kendra from the Lagna and the planet is not in the 6th/8th/12th. | Phaladeepika 7.26–7.28 |
| Raja Yoga | A Kendra lord and a Trikona lord joined, exchanging signs or in mutual aspect, both well placed; or a well-placed yoga-karaka | Phaladeepika 6.37 |
| Lakshmi Yoga | The 9th lord and Venus both in own/exaltation sign in a Kendra or Trikona | Phaladeepika 6.21 |
| Kemadruma | No planet (other than Sun and nodes) in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon — shown only if none of the cancelling placements applies | Phaladeepika 6.5 |
| Harsha / Sarala / Vimala (Viparita) | The 6th, 8th or 12th lord in another Dusthana, with a strong Lagna lord | Phaladeepika 6.63–6.70 |
| Dhana Yoga | A 2nd/11th lord linked with the lord of the Lagna, 5th or 9th | Classical wealth combinations |
4. Kundali Milan — Ashtakoot (36 Guna)
The free Milan page and the Milan PDF use one and the same calculation, so the score never differs. Published tables differ between sources; this is the version we use:
| Koota | Max | Our table |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Groom's varna equal to or higher than the bride's |
| Vashya | 2 | Five groups with the half-sign split for Sagittarius and Capricorn; points as published by Astroyogi / AnytimeAstro |
| Tara | 3 | Counted both ways; remainders 3, 5, 7 inauspicious; 1.5 points per direction |
| Yoni | 4 | The full 14 × 14 Yoni table (as used in Maitreya) |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Natural friendship of the Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Deva groom + Manushya bride = 5; Deva groom + Rakshasa bride = 1; Rakshasa groom + Deva/Manushya bride = 0 |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 2/12, 5/9, 6/8 = 0; cancelled when both Moon-sign lords are the same planet or mutual friends |
| Nadi | 8 | Same Nadi = 0; cancelled for same Rashi/different Nakshatra, same Nakshatra/different Rashi, or same Nakshatra/different Pada |
Grading: 28+ excellent, 21+ good, 18+ acceptable, below 18 low. An uncancelled Nadi dosha keeps a match out of the good grades whatever the total, and an uncancelled Bhakoot dosha means a match is never "excellent". A cancellation never changes the points — it is shown next to them.
Manglik in Milan: when both partners have Mars in a Manglik house, the doshas balance (dosha-samya). When only one is Manglik after cancellations, we say so and list the usual remedies.
5. Ten Poruthams (South Indian matching)
Shown next to the Ashtakoot score. Counting is from the girl's star (or Moon sign) to the boy's, both inclusive.
| Porutham | Agrees when |
|---|---|
| Dina | The count divided by 9 leaves 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0 (same star: agrees for Rohini, Ardra, Magha, Hasta, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati) |
| Gana | Same gana; Deva–Manushya is average; Rakshasa with another gana does not agree |
| Mahendra | Count 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 or 25 |
| Stree Deergha | Count above 13 (9–13 average) |
| Yoni | Same or friendly yoni; sworn-enemy yonis do not agree |
| Rasi | Any sign count except 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 |
| Rasi Adhipathi | Moon-sign lords friends or the same planet; neutral is average |
| Vasya | The classical vasya sign pairs (e.g. Aries–Leo/Scorpio, Taurus–Cancer/Libra) |
| Rajju | Different Rajju (Pada, Kati, Nabhi, Kantha, Siro) — the same Rajju is a deal-breaker |
| Vedha | The stars are not a Vedha pair (e.g. Ashwini–Jyeshtha) — Vedha is a deal-breaker |
7 or more agreeing = Uttamam, 5 or more = Madhyamam. Any Rajju or Vedha dosha makes the match "not recommended" in this tradition. Regional almanacs differ slightly in Dina, Stree Deergha and Rasi counting.
6. What a Kundali cannot tell you
A Kundali is a traditional reading, not a scientific prediction. Please use it alongside — never instead of — the judgement of your family, a qualified astrologer and, for health or legal matters, a professional.
