The story

In a village lived two best friends, Jumman Sheikh and Algu Chaudhary. People said their friendship was so strong that nothing could break it.

Jumman’s old aunt gave him her small piece of land, and in return he promised to look after her. But soon Jumman and his wife stopped caring for her. The aunt called the village panchayat — the council of elders — to decide. She asked Algu to be the judge, the panch.

Algu was worried. How could he judge his own best friend? But when he sat in the judge’s seat, he felt that he must speak only the truth. He decided that Jumman must give his aunt money every month to live on. Jumman was very angry and stopped speaking to Algu.

Some time later, Algu had a quarrel with a man over the price of an ox. This time the village chose Jumman as the panch. Jumman thought, “Now I can take my revenge!” But when he sat in the judge’s seat, he too felt the weight of being fair. He gave a just decision — in Algu’s favour.

After the meeting Jumman hugged Algu. “Today I understood,” he said. “When a person sits as a judge, he must forget friend and enemy. The panch speaks for God — Panch Parmeshwar.” The two friends were close again.

Moral of the Story

A true judge is fair to everyone — even to a friend, even to someone they are angry with.
