The story
Louis Pasteur was born in France in 1822, the son of a leather tanner. At school he was not a star — he was slow and careful, and he loved drawing portraits. A teacher noticed his steady effort and encouraged him to study science.
At that time nobody knew why milk and wine went bad, or why people got infections. Looking through his microscope, Pasteur showed that tiny living things — germs — were the cause. He found that gently heating a drink kills many of these germs without spoiling it. We still call this pasteurisation, and it keeps the milk we drink safe.
Pasteur’s life was not easy. Three of his young daughters died of illnesses, which made him even more determined to fight disease. In 1868, at the age of 45, he suffered a stroke that left one side of his body weak. He could not use his left hand well, but he kept working with the help of his assistants.
He developed vaccines for animal diseases. Then, in July 1885, a mother brought her nine-year-old son, Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a dog with rabies. Rabies was almost always deadly. Pasteur was not a medical doctor, and he was worried, but doctors working with him gave the boy a series of injections of Pasteur’s new vaccine. Joseph lived!
People around the world sent money to build the Pasteur Institute in Paris, which opened in 1888 and still fights diseases today. Pasteur said, "Chance favours only the prepared mind."

Parent–child activity
Sprinkle a little glitter ("germs") on your hands, then try to wipe it off with dry tissue. Next, wash with soap and water. Which worked better?
Parent / Teacher Discussion
Pasteur’s 1885 rabies treatment of Joseph Meister is well recorded. If a child is bitten or scratched by any animal, wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes and see a doctor the same day — rabies vaccine is very important in India.
