A traditional story. The Panchatantra (“five treatises”) is a collection of animal fables composed in Sanskrit and traditionally credited to a teacher named Vishnu Sharma, who used the stories to teach wisdom to young princes. This is a TotsName retelling in simple words.

The story

A family kept a mongoose as a pet. It loved their baby son and never left his side.

One day the mother went to fetch water and left the mongoose near the sleeping baby. A snake crept into the room. The brave mongoose fought the snake and chased it away from the cradle.

When the mother returned, the mongoose ran to greet her, its mouth marked from the fight. “It has hurt my baby!” she cried in panic, and she struck the mongoose before looking.

Then she saw the baby sleeping safely and the snake beside the cradle. She understood that the mongoose had saved her child. She wept, and she never again acted without first finding out the truth.

Moral of the Story

Do not act in haste — find out the facts first.
