A true story from history · 1875–1950. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — retold in simple words by TotsName. Where a detail comes from tradition rather than written records, the story says so.

The story

Vallabhbhai Patel grew up in a farming family in Gujarat. He studied hard, became a lawyer, and joined Gandhiji in the freedom movement.

In 1928, farmers in Bardoli were asked to pay much higher taxes even though their crops had failed. Patel led them in a peaceful protest, and the tax was reduced. The grateful farmers gave him the title "Sardar" — leader.

When India became free in 1947, there was a giant puzzle to solve. Besides the British provinces, there were more than 560 princely states, each with its own king or nawab. Sardar Patel, as India's first Home Minister, talked with the rulers one by one, persuading them to join India. Piece by piece, he joined the puzzle together.

He is remembered as the Iron Man of India. His birthday, 31 October, is celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), and the Statue of Unity in Gujarat — the tallest statue in the world — honours him.
