Why Was This Name Given?

Once a highwayman named Ratnakara, he meditated so long an anthill grew over him — and emerged reborn as Valmiki, "the anthill-born," the first poet of Sanskrit.

The Story

Valmiki invented the shloka, the verse-form of Sanskrit poetry, when grief at a hunter killing a bird poured out of him as rhythm. From that sorrow flowed the Ramayana, the first great poem of India.

His name is a promise that anyone can be transformed — and create something immortal.
